Ankylosing Spondylitis

Ankylosing spondylitis (AS) is a disease in the rheumatological family of conditions, in which the human body, for unknown reasons, starts to attack itself. In ankylosing spondylitis, it is the lumbar spine and sacroiliac joints (SIJs) in the buttock where the disease affects the joints. AS is far more common in males than females. Excessive inflammation is part of the disease process, so anti-inflammatory medication is part of the treatment regime.

AS may not be a debilitating condition in less severe cases. Australian batsman Michael Slater recently revealed that he had coped with a mild variety of this disorder during his cricket career, as had former English batsman Michael Atherton.
