Fractured fibula
The fibula is the smaller of the two bones in the shin, but despite this a fractured fibula is still a relatively serious injury. Whereas a fractured tibia usually takes 6-12 months for a full recovery, a fractured fibula usually takes 9-12 weeks.
Should a fractured fibula be treated surgically?
The closer a fibula fracture is to the ankle, the more likely it is to require surgery, as the major complication of fibula fracture is disruption of the normal anatomy of the ankle joint. More accurately, if the syndesmosis (ligament between the tibia and fibula) is disrupted in association with fibula fracture, then surgery is usually required. This occurs commonly with fibula fractures near the ankle and less commonly with high fibula fractures.
