The patellar tendon can rarely rupture, and if it does, it almost always requires surgical repair. Usually there is an underlying cause for a patellar tendon rupture - either a previous knee reconstruction using the patellar tendon or a case of chronic patellar tendinopathy. Recovery after surgical repair is usually good.
