An orthopaedic surgery conference in Sydney in late July was told that sporting injuries are responsible for many hip problems later in life. Leading Melbourne surgeon David Young explained that hip problems had many causes, including congenital problems with the structure of the hip joint, but that he was seeing more cases of hip joint degeneration where the hip was structurally normal but the load of sport put excessive forces on an otherwise normal joint. An example he cited was water polo, where modern changes to the style of the 'eggbeater' kick led to increased hip impingement.  For further conference details .
