Different approach to spear tackles perplexing

Two similar dangerous tackles and two completely different suspensions have dominated the Sydney newspapers this morning. The Storm's Michael Crocker is facing a 9 week suspension for a dangerous spear tackle in the NRL, whereas George Gregan has 'escaped' with a 1 week suspension for a similar tackle in the Super 14. Such tackles are rare in the AFL but Peter Burgoyne has been given a three week suspension for a 'spear tackle' previously. Whilst all tackles are different and there is such a thing as different grading, it appears that there is a chasm in tolerance between the different codes.

Dr Merv Cross suggested the Crocker suspension was on the money and the Gregan one was so light it was 'disgusting'. Read more at Foxsports. However, many past league players including predictably Storm coach Craig Bellamy have suggested that the NRL judiciary has gone over the top. Read more at SMH.

The main reason for banning spear tackles is the risk of neck injury, particularly disc prolapses (pictured) and even potentially quadriplegia.
