Shock wave therapy for tendon injuries
Shock wave therapy (also referred to as ESWT - extracorporeal shock wave therapy) is a treatment
available for tendon injuries. This treatment method originated in treating kidney stones, where the shock waves are used to break down calcium deposits in the kidneys. Therefore, in theory, tendon disorders where calcium deposits are causing pain in tendons are the most amenable to this form of treatment.
Shock wave therapy is used extensively in Europe and the USA and is becoming more popular in Australia. There is unlikely to be any harm associated with this form of treatment, but science has not to date been able to prove how useful it is in the various types of tendon disorders.
